The metropolitan area of Milano has a population of approximately 3.9 million. It is a focal point for international business and is the financial capital of Italy. Milano also is a leading center for the fashion industry. It hosts 8 universities as well as many centers of research.  People from all over the world come to Milano for work, in the outlying factories, in service industries, with home care of children and elderly, or as professionals.

Milano is the seat of an archbishop for the Roman Catholic Church though, due to the influence of Ambrose in the 4th Century, follows a religious calendar distinct from any other in the Roman Catholic world. The Duomo, or Cathedral, of Milano is the second largest in Europe after the Basilica of St. Peter's at the Vatican. The Duomo took over 700 years to build.

Milano is also famous for two champion soccer (football) teams, Milan and Inter
